Though the majority of bags on the market are made of fabric, each material has advantages and disadvantages, as you may have seen, these are the only plastic bags on our list. Plastics tend to better retain moisture while reducing airflow. Therefore, take that into account in selecting your stuff. Both materials are beneficial when handled properly.

The grow bags are constructed of sturdy polypropylene plastic, and they include handles on either side that make it easy to move them when they are full. The soil won’t get waterlogged because of the drainage holes that are already present in these bags.

Fold the bag, then store it until the end of the growing season the following year.

10. Sunrich 10 Gallon Grow Bags With 360° View (2 Pack)

MaterialClay, Plastic, Fabric
Number of Pieces2

  • Washable, foldable, breathable fabric construction
  • Sturdy design, well made
  • Blackout panels block light to protect certain crops from sunlight

  • The visualization panel may wear over multiple seasons

Sunrich’s 2-pack of 10-gallon grow bags has an unorthodox style. First and foremost, you receive a 360-degree ‘visualization window’ so you can see your potatoes throughout the growth process, which I really enjoyed; it was entertaining.

When growing potatoes, direct sunlight on the tubers will make them green. So this bag has a strip of black-out fabric to keep the light out until you wish to peep in. So, if you cultivate potatoes, make sure you use them.

These green high-quality bags are constructed of non-woven blackout fabric, so excess water will drain out and the roots will be well-conditioned and aerated. The bags are washable and foldable, allowing you to store them after harvest and reuse them year after year. Sunrich is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

Customer feedback indicates that the bags are dense and durable and that they may also be used for storage outside of the growing season. This method of potato cultivation is displacing traditional pot cultivation.

How To Plant Potatoes In A Bag

I always recommend chitting seed potatoes before planting them to give them the best possible start.

Place your seed potatoes on an old cardboard egg tray in a bright, but not direct sunlight, location.

The potato will grow little white shoots that will mature into a green head during the next two to three weeks. The vegetation is sprouting in quest of sunlight at this stage.

Planting & Earthing

  1. Once your chit potato sprouts, prepare your grow bag in the spot where you want to grow them to avoid having to move them later.

2. Roll down the sides of the grow bag like you would your sleeves. This prevents the planted potato seed from being shaded by the sun and allows them to get a robust start.

3. Add compost to the bottom of the grow bag to a depth of 6-8 inches.

4. Plant your seed potatoes at least two inches below the surface of the compost. Make sure the sprouting end is facing up,

5. Water them in, and keep a watch on them for the following several weeks to ensure they are maintained moist to prevent the compost from drying out.

6. Water thoroughly throughout the growing season to provide the greatest tubers, Potato plants are thirsty.

The potato plants will grow fast when they break the surface of the compost. When you have around 6 inches of green foliage, unfold the potato bag so it is above the tips of the foliage and ‘earth up’ your potatoes by gently covering them with more compost.

Earthing up will continue until the plants have reached full maturity and the potato grow bag is 3/4 full of compost. This procedure allows the plant to grow in a healthy manner with optimal sunshine exposure, while also making the most of the soil capacity and growing area provided by the grow bags.
When the plant matures, there will be an excess of potato tubers across the entire compost volume.

Best Compost For Potato Bags

Potatoes may be grown in practically any soil type, so don’t overcomplicate things. For best growth, the soil pH should be between 5.2 and 6.4, it should be nice and loose, and the richer the better for big healthy tubers.

Use peat-free compost or multi-purpose compost. Add some well-rotted manure or handmade compost if you have it. With plenty of drainage holes in the bottom of your grow bag, you may keep the soil light and free draining.

Because potatoes are root vegetables, they can benefit from an all-purpose vegetable fertilizer like a 4-4-4 that you may already have. Or, even better, you may get a potato fertilizer with a higher potash content to really boost tuber production and yields.

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Potato In A Bag

The duration of time it takes to grow potatoes depends on the sort of potato you wish to cultivate. There are three main varieties of potatoes, each with its own maturation time.
• First Earlies: Also known as new potatoes, plant after the frost in March. Within 10-12 weeks, it matures.
• Second Earlies: Plant following the frost in March. Within 14-16 weeks, it matures.
• Maincrop: Plant in April or after the last frost has passed. This crop will mature in 16-22 weeks

The length of the growing season is greatly determined on the type being grown. However, from the time of seeding until harvesting, allow 70-120 days. Start your grow bags in your greenhouse or patio as early as February and move them outside when the frost has passed.

When To Stop Watering Potatoes

After the end of the growing season, your potato plant’s leaves will begin to yellow and its stems will wither. Stop watering at this point and wait two weeks before harvesting your potatoes.

Best Potato Bags FAQs

In a bag, how far apart should potatoes be planted?

When growing seed potatoes in the earth, plant every 12 inches in trenches at a depth of around 6 inches. In gabs, however, intend to spread chitted potatoes at 8-10′′ spacing, which means you can obtain 3 plants per bag on average.

What is the ideal potato bag size?

Potato grows bags range in capacity from 1 gallon to 30 gallons. The most popular sizes are 10-gallon or larger since they produce a higher yield. We recommend using 10-gallon bags to plant 3-4 seed potatoes.
